The Mural of Belonging is a collaborative project between McMurray, VARSA's program Sources of Strength, and muralist Allie Walker. It was made in the spring of 2025. Students conceived the theme of the mural and worked with the muralist on the design and painting. Additionally, students (from Sources of Strength and others) created individual boxes around the border depicting where they have found belonging. We hope you love this mural and that it shows the brightness of our middle school students.

Thanks to all of our families who joined us for Curriculum Night at Chautauqua. These evenings are a chance for teachers to share learning goals, classroom activities, and upcoming projects. Parents and guardians are able to connect with VISD staff and gain insight for the year ahead, setting a positive tone for strong school-home partnerships.
We hope to see you at Curriculum Night for McMurray (September 30) and Vashon High (October 9).

October is PIE month! Each fall, for the past 38 years, Vashon Partners in Education (PIE) has raised money to grant teachers' wishes. PIE funds grants submitted by teachers and staff for creative and innovative programs and materials that are not covered by the district budget. Since 1987, PIE has raised over 1.9 million dollars and funded over 1600 grants. These included field trips, assemblies, Lego Robotics, science and art enrichment, and state-of-the-art interactive teaching tools.

The Vashon Nature Center is kicking off its fall SalmonWatcher programs. All volunteers are trained to identify different types of spawning salmon in our creeks and how to find their redds (nests). You will be assigned either a sit spot or a walking reach along a creek that you will visit 1-2 times weekly from October to December. Join an amazing cadre of islanders collectively recording the return of salmon for over 20 years, longer than Vashon Nature Center has been in existence (we inherited this long-running program)! Salmon data is used by local land managers like King County and the Land Trust to inform salmon conservation plans and restoration efforts.
